Trinity Methodist Church & Gardens

St Mary’s Cathedral, located at Trinity Gardens in Wood Green, was built in 1871 as ‘Trinity Methodist Church,’ with funding from local businessman, Sir Francis Lycett.

It became a Greek Orthodox Church in 1970, acquiring its current dedication to the Dormition of the Theotokos.

Sir Francis Lycett

“Trinity Chapel: This stone was laid by Sir Francis Lyccett LP April 20 1871. The first Chapel commenced by the aid of a Fund to promote the erection of fifty Wesleyan Methodist Chapels in London and its suburbs to each of which Sir Francis engaged to give one thousand pounds.”

Sir Francis Lycett was a British businessman and philanthropist, and a prominent member of the Methodist Church. Following his death in 1880 at his home in Highbury Grove, he left an estate of more than a quarter of a million pounds, much of which he willed to various Methodist charities.
